About the Author

Herbert George Wells is considered by many to be the father of the modern science fiction story. He was born in Bromley, Kent, in England in 1866. Wells' father was a shopkeeper, and his mother, prior to her marriage, worked as a domestic servant.

In 1883, Wells began working as a teacher at the Midhurst Grammar School. Not long after, he enrolled in the Normal School of Science, in London. Later, Wells became active in politics. Twice he ran for Parliament.

The Time Machine, published in 1895, was Wells' first novel. The book's popular success, which continues to this day, allowed Wells to stop teaching and devote himself to writing. The three novels that followed, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Invisible Man, and The War of the Worlds are also considered science fiction classics. Wells died in London in 1946.
