Do you remember reading or watching The Tale of Peter Rabbit growing up? Reading about Jemima Puddle-Duck or Benjamin Bunny? Perhaps you’ve seen the 2006 movie Miss Potter with Renee Zellweger? I’m expecting a resounding ‘yes!’ from many people.

It was on this day in 1866 that Beatrix Potter – the creator of the aforementioned books and one of the world’s best loved children’s writers and illustrators – was born in England.

Growing up she loved to sketch animals and invented stories about them, which she would later publish.

It was in 1902 that Potter published The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which launched her career as a children’s author. More than 20 other books followed, all immersing us deep in the English countryside where we fell in love with her loveable characters, from naughty Peter Rabbit, to tidy Mrs Tittlemouse and unlucky Jeremy Fisher. Books such as The Tale of Gloucester and The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle. Books now considered children’s classics.

This year, fans of Beatrix Potter received welcome news. The Tale of Kitty-in-Boots, a previously unpublished story would be hitting our shelves very soon. Potter had only done one illustration for the book, so Quentin Blake created the images to accompany this tale.
