A coffee table book for people who don’t have particularly good coffee tables.

by |August 1, 2017

Author, comedian, and mid-century enthusiast Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross draws inspiration from his acclaimed ABC television series Streets Of Your Town to create The Rumpus Room, a nostalgic selection of short stories from the suburbs. It’s a heavily pictorial book that Rosso describes as “a coffee table book for people who don’t have particularly good coffee tables”.

“I wanted the book to physically have a sense of nostalgia to match these stories that are a mixture of memoir and fiction.

I was rolling around with the concepts of the suburbs for a couple of years making Streets Of Your Town and these stories reflect a more personal side to where we live. Travelling for the series and for my Man About the House tour was incredibly inspiring and this is represented in this book.” Tim Ross

From the beachside holiday house to the backyard pool and the rumpus room, the architecture of the suburbs forms the backdrop to a uniquely Australian way of life. Ross roams through these familiar places to paint a picture of Australian domesticity and its relationship to the Australian psyche in all its funny, nostalgic, ironic and often acutely cringe-worthy glory.

“If you ever tried to pinch a sip of Mum’s West Coast Cooler or thought that no culinary master would ever match the delights of the Margaret Fulton cookbook, you’ll love whiling away the afternoon in The Rumpus Room. NB. Bring a plate.” Russell Jackson, The Guardian

“If you are after a chuckle and some happy reminiscing of home life in Australia, then do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of this book. You won’t regret it.” Matt B, reader.
