This was a difficult book to write, dealing as it does with grief, violence and terrible injustice. But there is joy and strength in these pages too, rising up through the voices of Catching, Teller and Crow.
The three girls are stronger together than they are apart. So are we, and neither of us could have told this tale alone. We draw on each other’s strengths – Ambelin is good at plot and dialogue; Zeke is the poet. We challenge each other’s storytelling, demanding that we are better writers. Writing can be a lonely process. A terrifying one too. It can be so difficult to know whether you have told a story in the way it needs and deserves to be told; whether you have done justice to the characters. We were conscious when writing of how many false stories have been told about Aboriginal women and girls; of all the lies that denied the power and resilience of generations. We wanted the strength of those generations to flow through the pages like a river. We hope we succeeded.
Catching Teller Crow is in many ways a tale of connections – the links we make with each other, and how family and friends bring us back to ourselves and carry us home. It is written by a brother and sister who are both family and friend to each other. And we are proud to bring this story into the world.
