New book from the author of The Night Circus.
Erin Morgentsern, author of international bestselling novel The Night Circus, has announced her long awaited second book.
The Starless Sea and it has been described as a “magical, timeless and wholly original” love story and is set to be published in November 2019.
The Night Circus has been translated into 37 languages and has sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Nominated for The Guardian First Book Award, the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Galaxy Book Awards, it has won Morgenstern legions of devoted fans who have all been eagerly awaiting her second book five years!
As previously reported by The Bookseller, The Starless Sea tells the story of a Vermont-based graduate student called Zachary who discovers a strange book hidden in the library stacks. His curiosity is piqued when between its pages he finds a story from his own childhood, leading him to uncover a series of clues and a doorway to a subterranean library, hidden far below the surface of the earth.
The blurb continues: “Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a handsome barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly-soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose – in both the mysterious book and in his own life.”
From the publisher’s blurb:
What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians – it is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also those who are intent on its destruction.

2018 Richell Prize for Emerging Writers
Melbourne based author Ruth McIver has been awarded the 2018 Richell Prize for Emerging Writers for her work-in-progress ‘I Shot the Devil’
This is what the judges has to say about the winning entry:
‘It was an incredibly strong shortlist, but the judges were all united in their praise of Richell Prize 2018 winner, Ruth McIver’s ‘I Shot the Devil’. Set in a fictional town in Long Island, New York, the story has two narrative threads: one taking place in 1994, the other in 2010. The novel draws on the traditions of memoir and true crime writers to create a dark and unforgettable literary noir that shows an emerging writer of considerable literary talent. Atmospheric and chillingly entertaining, this was a novel that every single judge wanted to read more of.’
The shortlist for the Richell Prize was selected from 660 entries. Applicants are required to submit three chapters and a synopsis of their proposed work – with the winner receiving $10,000 and mentoring from a Hachette publisher to help develop the work for publication.
The Richell Prize was established in 2014, in memory of Hachette Australia’s CEO, Matt Richell, who died suddenly in 2014. Offered annually, the Prize is open to unpublished writers of adult fiction and adult narrative non-fiction, with the aim of assisting emerging writers who are looking to take the next step with their career.
