Stan Lee, legendary writer, editor and publisher of Marvel Comics has died at age 95.
As the creator/co-creator of Spiderman, The Avengers, X-Men, Black Panther and countless others, Stan Lee is responsible for many of the world’s most popular superheroes. While editor-in-chief (and later as publisher and chairman) he is credited with leading the expansion of Marvel Comics into the large multimedia corporation we know today – a true cultural phenomenon.
A prolific writer, Stan Lee is known creating relatable characters. In the 1960s and 70s this was what set his work apart. His characters were more flawed and nuanced, his stories more socially relevant than was common in comic books of the time. In 1971 he pushed censorship boundaries by including an anti-drug storyline in “The Amazing Spiderman”.
The cultural impact of Stan Lee’s work is undeniable – if it is difficult to imagine what the entertainment industry would even look like today without his work.
“I used to be embarrassed because I was just a comic-book writer while other people were building bridges or going on to medical careers. And then I began to realize: entertainment is one of the most important things in people’s lives. Without it they might go off the deep end. I feel that if you’re able to entertain people, you’re doing a good thing.” – Stan Lee (The Washington Post, July 23, 2010)
Stan Lee’s dynamic imagination and gift with words has ensured he leaves behind a powerful legacy. His creative process with artists has become known as “The Marvel Method.” His characters have been immortalised time and time again on both page and screen. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a one of the highest grossing media franchises in the world and future films will not be the same without Stan Lee’s routine cameo appearances.
Stan Lee will long be remembered as a storyteller, an artist and a beloved figurehead.
There will never be another Stan Lee. For decades he provided both young and old with adventure, escape, comfort, confidence, inspiration, strength, friendship and joy. He exuded love and kindness and will leave an indelible mark on so, so, so many lives. Excelsior!!

Stan Lee, you made misfits cool. You made heroes out of the most unlikely of people. Thank you for celebrating nerds. pic.twitter.com/iTojUWXV7w
