Every kid wants to laugh, but Matt Stanton is the author who can make it happen!
Matt is the author of the mega-bestselling Funny Kid series about a kid named Max, the lovable class clown who has delighted thousands of kids across Australia and beyond with his hilarious antics.
The latest book in the series is Funny Kid Slapstick and it grew out of Matt’s love of 90’s sport comedy movies – think The Mighty Ducks, Cool Runnings and Little Giants. In Funny Kid Slapstick, Max is forced to join his local ice hockey team… which means we can expect to see lots of classic fall-on-your-butt action!
“The reason I chose ice hockey is because I think ice hockey is the funniest of all sports,” says Matt. “It’s the only sport where the first thing you have to do is just learn how to not fall over… and so that provides lots of slapstick humour opportunities!”
Matt Stanton came to Booktopia’s offices this week to sign some copies of Funny Kid Slapstick, and to sit and chat with Sarah McDuling and myself about the book and his upcoming role as an ambassador for Australian Reading Hour.
Australian Reading Hour is an awesome nationwide event that encourages people to make time for reading – all you have to do is stop everything and read for an hour! September 19 is the date for this year’s Reading Hour, and Matt is super excited to be playing such an active part in this year’s event.
“The idea with the Australian Reading Hour campaign is to really champion reading across the country. It’s an industry-meets-government kind of initiative to really encourage the value of reading both for kids and for adults. It’s wonderful to be part of that.”
Like his fellow ARH ambassadors Sally Rippin (Billie B. Brown, Hey Jack) and Mick Elliott (Squidge Dibley Destroys the School), Matt has written an exclusive mini Funny Kid book – Funny Kid Next Level. That book will be out very soon (watch this space!), but Funny Kid Slapstick is just days away from release so order yourself a signed copy before they sell out!
Listen to our chat with Matt below.

Funny Kid: 5
Every kid wants to laugh, but Max is the boy who can make it happen.
Only now he's been forced to join the local ice-hockey team, and there's nothing funny about slipping over and getting a frozen bum. Or is there?
Max is the funny kid... and this time he's skating on thin ice!
Epic fails, a wrestling rhinoceros called Roxanne, fake news, locker rooms filled with popcorn and the dreaded return of Mr Armstrong are just some of the things in store for Max and his friends in this brand-new Funny Kid adventure.
