When Lynette Noni published her debut YA fantasy book in 2015, she had no idea just how much it was going to change her life.

That book was Akarnae, the first book in The Medoran Chronicles, and it tells the story of a girl named Alexandra Jennings who stumbles into a mysterious world and discovers that she has the kind of extraordinary gifts that most people could only dream of. It went on to become an Australian bestseller.

“I just wrote it for me,” says Lynette of her first beloved book. “I couldn’t find a book I wanted to read so I wrote one.”

Discovering one’s own power seems to be a running theme in Lynette’s books – her second series, the Whisper duology, also focuses on a girl with a unique gift. This “gift”, however, seems to be anything but – her powers are so dangerous that the girl has been locked away in an underground facility for over two years and hasn’t spoken a single word in that time in fear that she’ll unleash them onto the world.

Lynette was mid-way through the edits on Raelia, the second book of the Medoran Chronicles, when she began feeling the itch to write something new.

“This one sentence came to me,” she says. “‘They call me Jane Doe’ …”

That sentence eventually became the first line of the prologue to Whisper, a book which earned Lynette the 2019 Gold Inky award and the 2019 ABIA for Small Publishers’ Children’s Book of the Year. Lynette is now wrapping up the Whisper duology with the second book, Weapon, which will be hitting shelves on 5 November and promises to answer all of the burning questions that its predecessor left in its wake. Once Weapon is out in the world, Lynette can focus on her next book, The Prison Healer, which will be the first in a thrilling new series.

“This story was in my head for so long that I knew the moment I started writing how the entire book would unfold,” says Lynette.

If the successes of Whisper and Akarnae are anything to go by, you definitely want to keep The Prison Healer on your radar.

Lynette came to Booktopia last week to sign some copies of Weapon, along with a new special hardcover edition of Akarnae. She then sat down for a podcast with Booktopia’s Bronwyn Eley and Sarah McDuling for a chat about her books and her writing life. Listen to the podcast below and grab a signed copy of Weapon and Akarnae before they sell out!
