2019 FAB Award Winner

We are incredibly excited to announce that the very first winner of the 2019 Favourite Australian Book Award is Kitty Flanagan, who has won the $5000 prize for her hilarious etiquette guide 488 Rules for Life!

“488 Rules for Life is not a self-help book, because it’s not you who needs help, it’s other people. Whether they’re walking and texting, asphyxiating you on public transport with their noxious perfume cloud, or leaving one useless square of toilet paper on the roll, a lot of people just don’t know the rules.

But thanks to Kitty Flanagan’s comprehensive guide to modern behaviour, our world will soon be a much better place.

This book started out as a running joke on Kitty’s segment on ABC’s The Weekly and quickly blossomed into a real-life instruction manual for being a decent human (with a cheeky nod in its cover design to Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life). If you’ve ever thought it was OK to heat up fish-based meals in the shared office microwave, or you’re a serial texter-and-walker, this might be the book you didn’t know you needed.

Over 52,000 votes were cast in our poll for over 300 Australian books across fiction, non-fiction, kids and young adult fiction. As you can imagine, the stakes were high and Kitty faced some tough competition from the likes of Rachael Johns, Bruce Pascoe and Heather Morris (check out the Top 50 on our Twitter), but ultimately emerged as the clear winner for the 2019 Favourite Australian Book Award.

Congratulations Kitty!

But thanks to Kitty Flanagan's comprehensive guide to modern behaviour, our world will soon be a much better place. A place where people don't ruin the fruit salad by putting banana in it … where your co-workers respect your olfactory system and don't reheat their fish curry in the office microwave ... where middle aged men don't have ponytails …
