Christina Henry is the author of the Chronicles of Alice duology, Alice and The Red Queen, a dark and twisted take on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, as well as Lost Boy, an origin story of Captain Hook from Peter Pan.
Christina Henry is currently touring Australia for Supanova (more info on that here), and she’s on The Booktopian today to answer our Ten Terrifying Questions. Read on!
To begin with why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself – where were you born? Raised? Schooled?
I was born in Narnia, raised in Middle-Earth and schooled at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
What did you want to be when you were twelve, eighteen and thirty? And why?
I always wanted to be a writer, even when I was very young. I spent most of my time living inside books and I wanted to stay there for the rest of my life.
What strongly held belief did you have at eighteen that you do not have now?
That The Smiths were the best band in the history of music.
What were three works of art – book or painting or piece of music, etc – you can now say, had a great effect on you and influenced your own development as a writer?
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, and Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
Considering the innumerable artistic avenues open to you, why did you choose to write a novel?
I can’t sing, dance, play an instrument or draw a straight line, but I know how to string words into a coherent sentence. I hope.
Please tell us about your latest novel!
Looking Glass is a collection of four linked novellas set in my Chronicles of Alice universe. One story is about Alice’s sister, Elizabeth; one story is about young Hatcher; two stories are about Alice and Hatcher’s adventures post-Red Queen.
What do you hope people take away with them after reading your work?
Every reader’s experience of a book is different, so I think every reader takes away something different.
Who do you most admire in the realm of writing and why?
I admire any writer that can stick with this profession. It can be incredibly frustrating and gruelling, but at the same time one of the most fulfilling jobs in the world.
Many artists set themselves very ambitious goals. What are yours?
My goal is always to finish the book I’m currently writing.
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Strangely, I find that the more I write, the less qualified I feel to give advice. The best I can say is find your own way – people will try to tell you that writing a book must be done “x” way or “y” way but the only right way is the one that gets you to finish your story.
Thanks Christina!
