When it Drops is a heart warming and laugh-out-loud funny YA debut from the award winning radio presenter Alex Dyson. It follows the story of Caleb Clifford, a socially awkward sixteen-year-old boy who – unbeknownst to almost everyone – is a very talented musician. Caleb understands music perhaps better than he understands people, and has secretly been writing and recording his own songs … songs that he doesn’t intend for anybody else to hear!
After carelessly leaving his computer unguarded in the presence of a trouble-making younger brother, one of Caleb’s songs gets posted online and promptly goes viral. Pretty soon, his whole life starts to change, in ways both good and mortifying. Caleb’s song, the song everyone loves, the song taking the country by storm, just so happens to be about the epic crush he has on his former best friend. Launched so unexpectedly (and humiliatingly) into the spotlight, Caleb must find a way to navigate his sudden notoriety while also dealing with friendships and family dynamics.
This book was so much fun to read. Full of lovable characters, light-hearted humour, some poignant emotional moments and a deep love of music, When it Drops is the kind of book that really wears its heart on its sleeve. Caleb is a great main character, so relatable and charming in his awkwardness that it’s impossible not to love him! There is a particularly wonderful scene involving a radio interview that goes terribly awry – to avoid spoilers I won’t go into detail, but I found myself gasping in dismay while simultaneously cheering in triumph.
Overall, When it Drops is an engaging and highly entertaining coming-of-age story. I hope this is the first of many books from Alex Dyson!
—When it Drops by Alex Dyson (Hardie Grant Egmont) is out on the 1st of May.
When It Drops
Sixteen-year-old songwriter and aspiring social outcast Caleb Clifford fills his world with music, but – like most things – keeps his songs to himself.
That is until his little brother leaks Caleb's most personal track online; a track that's quite obviously about his secret crush. Having his innermost feelings (accompanied by a funky bassline) go viral is not Caleb's idea of a good time. But is this the end of everything, or the start?...
