When you’re adored by millions online, what happens when a real-life danger threatens to destroy it all? This is the question at the heart of People Like Her, a thrilling debut from Ellery Lloyd that’s guaranteed to keep you riveted.

People Like Her

‘Ellery Lloyd’ is the writing pseudonym for Collette Lyons and Paul Vlitos.

People like Emmy Jackson. Especially people online, where she is known as ‘Mamabare’, an Insta-mum famous for revealing the truth about modern parenthood to her million followers. But Emmy isn’t always as honest as she wants her fans to believe. With a million adoring followers, there is one person who knows the truth. Who knows the pain of thoughtless words and wants Emmy to suffer, to know what it’s like to lose everything. Emmy and her family are in danger, she just doesn’t realise it yet.

People Like Her is fast-paced and immediately captivating, giving readers a glimpse of peril before backtracking six weeks to begin the story. It’s told through three perspectives; Emmy, her husband Dan, and a mystery person. This unknown person wants Emmy and her family to suffer, that much is clear. Even as we learn of their heartbreaking history and motive, it doesn’t make the threat that they pose any less disturbing. As a result, the shift in perspectives creates an incredibly suspenseful read that will leave you guessing until the end … and beyond.

This gripping story is set in the world of social media and ‘mum influencers’, where every moment is an opportunity to curate content, monitise family moments and grow online reach. I also found this to be an interesting exploration of the moral ambiguity that comes with being a ‘parent’ influencer, the validation sought through influencer culture and the dark side of internet fame.

People Like Her is a genuinely twisty novel – you get the sense that the author enjoys throwing red herrings at the reader. I was fascinated by the social media aspect of the novel, while growing increasingly anxious at the looming threat. If you’re a fan of suspense, People Like Her will definitely please you.
