It’s been a long time coming, but A Court of Silver Flames is finally here and I have come to sing its praises! The highly anticipated next instalment in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, Silver Flames is immersive, enthralling, and unabashedly sexy, solidifying the series’ reclassification as adult fiction.
Sarah J. Maas first announced the continuation of the ACOTAR series through the eyes of Feyre’s fiery sister, Nesta, on her Instagram last year, and fan art and theories have been floating around ever since. Many fans (including myself) were unsure of how to feel about the upcoming book, not having explored Nesta’s backstory before and only seen her prickly side in A Court of Wings and Ruin and A Court of Frost and Starlight. But Maas moves quickly in Silver Flames to reassure her readers as to the direction she’s taking.
Proud, swift to anger and slow to forgive, Nesta is finding it hard to adjust to life as High Fae in a new world while healing from her past traumas. Entirely misunderstood, her quick temper and aloofness are a front to mask the self-hatred brewing inside and bar anyone from looking too closely. Unable to deal with the horrors she faced in the Hybern war and the overwhelming guilt she feels over her family’s demise, Nesta shuts everyone out and loses herself in sex, alcohol and between the pages of a good romance novel.
Until Cassian walks in, hell-bent on bringing her back from the brink, which eventuates in some amusing verbal sparring and palpable sexual tension, sure to have any SJM fan binge-reading this in one sitting. Whisked away to Windhaven, the pair are forced to confront both their inner demons and one another as Nesta must master her newfound powers to maintain peace in the lands of Prythian. Finding her inner strength by empowering women who have experienced similar traumas, Nesta recruits a crew of priestesses to train under the watchful eye of Cassian and Azriel, and together they form a friendship that is pivotal to Nesta’s journey of healing.
Nesta’s unbecoming is truly beautiful to witness – seeing her shed the weight of her self-loathing while letting others in, particularly Feyre and Cassian, will undoubtedly have you tearing up. In Nesta, you will find a refreshing, relatable character who is unapologetically herself.
There’s plenty of side plots honed in on The Inner Circle, most of which are focused on fan-favourites Rhys and Feyre, while the conflict at hand is only just beginning. There’s a new villain, opening up a million possibilities for what’s to come in the next book. I’m very excited and have a good feeling it will either follow Azriel or Elain!
—A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas (Bloomsbury Australia) is out now.
