The beloved children’s book writing duo Kate & Jol Temple are back with a brand new book: The Underdogs: Catch a Cat Burglar! Complete with illustrations by Shiloh Gordon, this is a fun tale about the Underdog Detective Agency, which has a proud tradition of sniffing out trouble (plus sniffing each other’s butts). They’re on a mission to catch Dogtown’s elusive cat burglar, but if they want to crack this case, they’re going to need help …

Today, you can meet the two main characters from The Underdogs: Barkley the dog and Fang the cat, who are here to tell us all about the book. Read on!

What can you tell us about Dogtown and the Underdog Detective Agency?

Barkley: Dogtown is a town like any other. Except it’s run by dogs. It’s a busy place too with its share of problems – including crime!

Fang: That’s where the Underdog Detective Agency comes in. We’re all about solving Dogtown’s biggest mysteries.

Isn’t it a little bit funny for a cat to be working for the Underdog Detective Agency?

Fang: Sure is! But in a city that’s gone to the dogs, sometimes you need a cat! I’m actually the only cat on the team.

Barkley: We’re lucky to have Fang as one of the Underdogs. She can jump, climb, she’s got a sharp tooth, she’s got cat-like reflexes …

Fang: Obviously! And I can sleep for sixteen hours a day!

I hear you’ve got a new case to crack at the Underdog Detective Agency. Tell us about it!

Barkley: We’ve got a new case and we’re hot on the tail (so to speak!) of a Cat Burglar who’s been stealing jewels and diamonds from Dogtown’s rich and famous. If we can crack this case it will really put us on the map. You see, not a lot of cases come our way. Those pesky Top Dogs get all the best cases these days!

Fang: The Top Dogs are Dogtown’s number one detective agency. We’re like number … well that’s not important is it?

What’s the best way to catch a cat burglar?

Barkley: When it comes to catching a crook, you need to be like a dog with a bone.

Fang: No clue left undug!

Barkley: When you pick up a scent stick to it!

Fang: And try not to leave fur on the couch.

Would you say you sometimes have to risk it to get the (dog) biscuit?

Fang: I wouldn’t say that because I don’t eat dog food. Sorry, it just doesn’t agree with me.

Barkley: It’s true. She’s a fussy eater.

They say cats and dogs can’t work together. What do you reckon?

Barkley: If you’d asked me before Fang joined the Underdogs I’d say you’re spot on. Like a Dalmatian. But I’ve got a good feeling about Fang.

Fang: Thanks Barkley. And you dogs aren’t so bad either. Your bark is definitely worse than your bite. Plus, I think it’s going to take a cat to catch a cat burglar.

Barkley: But if you mess up Fang, you’re out on your tail!

Furballs: any thoughts?

Barkley: Errr … the worst!

Fang: Excuse me …

Fang: Not a furball. That was that dog biscuit I had. I told you dog food doesn’t agree with me.

Thanks guys!

Barkley: You’re welcome.

Fang: I think I’m gonna take a nap now …
