Amy’s Favourite of the Month!

As an extra treat each month, I usually recommend one of my fave reads/authors to you. This month I’m taking this space to remember an absolute pillar of the Australian romance community, Valerie Parv O.A.M., who passed away late last month.

As stated in the Romance Writers of Australia monthly magazine, Valerie was a ‘beloved author, mentor and educator’. She was a Life Member of RWA and achieved national and international recognition for her life’s work. Valerie was a leading light, a loyal friend and a powerful advocate for the romance genre.

And, as New Woman Magazine put it, ‘Valerie Parv is one of the planet’s most widely read romance fiction writers. Visit Iceland, Korea, Bulgaria or Czechoslovakia and you’ll find women curled up with a Parv saga’.

She sold 34 million books and was translated all around the globe, writing not only romance but sci-fi romance, romantic suspense, movie scripts and short stories. As an aside, Valerie’s how-to book on writing romance – The Art of Romance Writing – was the first craft book I ever read and it still sits in my book case today.

Vale Valerie. You will be missed.

If you’d like to know more about the warm and fascinating Valerie I recommend her memoir.

34 Million Books

by Valerie Parv

9780648916802

Have you ever wondered what makes a writer? Or if you might become one yourself? Part memoir and part writing guide, Valerie Parv’s book provides a fascinating look into her world of words.

Valerie has been published since the age of fourteen when the Australian Women’s Weekly accepted her first article. Ninety books, dozens of short fiction, magazine serials, movie scripts and articles followed. She has sold over 34 million books and eBooks translated into 29 languages. As she recounts here, from the drama of Parvgate to meeting some of her personal heroes and being made a Member of the Order of Australia, writing has sustained her, challenged her, frustrated and excited her throughout her career. Valerie concludes each chapter with a “writing takeaway” with unique insights and a few caveats for those interested in how she works her story magic or would like to follow in her footsteps.
