Earlier this month, Kentaro Miura, creator of the dark fantasy manga Berserk, passed away at just 54 years old. When news of his death was made public last week, the international response was acute, sending the series to the top of bestseller lists around the world.
Berserk was first published in Japan in 1989 and has gone on to become one of the longest running and best selling manga series of all time, spawning a popular anime adaptation. Its influence runs deep in manga and anime today, including in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, as well as in role-playing games like the Final Fantasy franchise.
In addition to the confronting violence and dark themes of Berserk, fans praise the intricate artwork and the narrative’s depth and complexity.
