Glen James is the host of the popular podcast, my millennial money. A retired financial adviser, he brings practical and fun financial help, making the boring bearable and the complex engaging. With a particular interest in personal finance and small business, his advice is not only for millennials, but suitable for all. Sort Your Money Out is his first book.
Today, Glen James is on the blog to take on our Ten Terrifying Questions! Read on …
1. To begin with, why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself – where were you born? Raised? Schooled?
I was born at Gosford Hospital. I was raised at Berkeley Vale and attended both Berkeley Vale primary and high school. All on the Central Coast of NSW, where I still live now. It’s home!
2. What did you want to be when you were twelve, eighteen and thirty? And why?
To be honest, not sure about specific ages, but I always knew I wanted to do something to do with media, audio, video, personal finance and online business. I don’t know why – just always had a passion for these things. I feel blessed that part of what I get to do today with the Sort Your Money Out team includes all of these things.
3. What strongly held belief did you have at eighteen that you don’t have now?
That coffee didn’t taste good. Now I have a very refined palette for quality filter coffee. So much so that I had my own blend made!
4. What are three works of art – this could be a book, painting, piece of music, film, etc – that influenced your development as a writer?
I’m actually not a writer, I’m just a guy who wrote a book about money!
I would also say that my previous clients from when I was a financial adviser, and the my millennial money community have influenced my development as a writer – as I wrote this book for them. The questions and financial issues they have had along the way have been my case study to produce the content that’s within the book. If people aren’t art, what is?
5. Considering the many artistic forms out there, what appeals to you about writing non-fiction?
To be honest, it’s all I know. I wouldn’t know where to start with writing fiction. This book has been a dream of mine and to me it didn’t matter what category on the shelves it was fitting into.
6. Please tell us about your latest book!
It’s a practical personal finance book that walks people through setting up their financial life in the right way to win with money. I’ve helped thousands of people get on top of their money and have a clear plan forward. I have written this in practical and matter of fact style of writing. When I teach about money, I like to be practical, helpful and fun. This book covers many topics such as investing concepts, ethical investing, money for singles and low-income earners and more.
7. What do you hope people take away with them after reading your work?
I just want people to be encouraged with their finances. I want people to take one thing and implement it, however small it is!
One thing I have experienced in building the my millennial money community, is that people’s lives have been changed through taking ahold of the principles that I talk about in my book, like the Glen James Spending Plan for example.
8. Who do you most admire in the writing world and why?
Seth Godin. His books, particularly ‘the dip’ changed the way I do business. ‘The dip’ is about knowing where you are in your business journey and committing through that dip.
9. Many artists set themselves very ambitious goals. What are yours?
My aim is to sell 10,000 copies of my book!
10. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Just write. Set time aside from distractions and get it done. Don’t worry about making it perfect. If you have a great publisher they will help. I’m thankful to my publisher Wiley and their team for encouraging me while writing and all the hard work they have done in making my book dream a reality.
Thank you for playing!
