Alan Geoffrey Yates was a literary phenomenon but you might know him better as Carter Brown, the international bestselling pulp fiction sensation.

An English-born Australian writer of detective fiction, Carter Brown was famous for writing the Al Wheeler series about a homicide investigator in fictional Pine County, Los Angeles. Between 1954 and 1984 Yates published over 200 novels and novellas under the Carter Brown name, with reportedly 150 million copies sold worldwide and President John F. Kennedy rumoured to be a big fan.

He’s the great crime novelist that the world nearly forgot, but now his backlist is about to be reissued and given thrilling new life, thanks to the Brio Books team here at Booktopia. We’re starting off with the first four books in the Lieutenant Al Wheeler series (available exclusively for Booktopia Book Club members!).

The Wicked (Lieutenant AI Wheeler: Book 1)

The Wicked was the first Carter Brown novella to feature the ‘unorthodox’ LA Lieutenant Al Wheeler and it sees Al investigating the murder of a screenwriter of a western who made enemies of the cast and crew by writing a series of kiss and tell articles for a gossip magazine. Al knows that the cop who found the body is hiding something and soon there are dead bodies aplenty while our hero falls for the leading lady — and pretty much every other dame in town!

Blonde Verdict (Lieutenant AI Wheeler: Book 2)

In Blonde Verdict (published as The Brazen in the US) Lieutenant Al Wheeler investigates the murder of a lawyer after the man is scratched with curare. Before long his mistress and her lover are also bumped off in the same manner. Is the killer the lawyer’s merry widow, a Chicago mobster who recently arrived in town, or someone else? And what of the woman Al ends up proposing to?

Delilah Was Deadly (Lieutenant AI Wheeler: Book 3)

In Delilah Was Deadly, ‘unorthodox’ LA cop Lieutenant Al Wheeler has just been promoted to the head of Homicide following his success cracking his last case. This time round, a ‘social editor’ of a fashion magazine is discovered dead inside a safe, strangled with a pink nylon girdle, wearing his silk pyjamas with a rose inside his breast pocket. It looks like this might be the work of Satanists but before long the bodies start to pile up when one of Al’s colleagues gets killed …

No Harp For My Angel (Lieutenant AI Wheeler: Book 4)

9781922598516

In No Harp For My Angel, Al Wheeler is vacationing in Florida when he hits on a redhead named Julie Adams, and thus meets crime boss Johnny Lynch. Lynch has Wheeler beat up and framed for a car theft, but fortunately the chief of police is an old friend of Al’s. He tells Al that a lot of pretty, young girls have gone missing in the area, and that he thinks Lynch is involved. Al is talked into going undercover, posing as a Chicago gangster, to infiltrate Lynch’s gang and get to the bottom of it …
