We KNOW you have a ton of questions about the new book (Will Bryce and Hunt’s fledgling relationship survive? Will we see the return of the messenger otters???), so we’re thrilled to be able to bring you this Q&A with Sarah J. Maas herself, courtesy of our friends at Bloomsbury Australia.

It’s been two years since book one in the Crescent City series, House of Earth and Blood – what was your favourite part of returning to this world?

SJM: I couldn’t wait to get back to writing about Crescent City. We got to know Bryce and Hunt pretty well in book one, but I loved getting to spend more time with the rest of the crew. And of course I also loved . . . intensifying Bryce and Hunt’s relationship!

What do you love most about your heroine, Bryce Quinlan?

SJM: Her snarky sense of humor is so much fun to write – and her Starlight Fancy horse collection!

The world of Crescent City is much more modern than the world of A Court of Thorns and Roses – what were the best things and the challenges of world building?

SJM: The best was modern cursing, it’s much easier to use a familiar curse than try to create new ones from scratch. The biggest challenge was managing the flow of information in a world of cell phones and text messages. I had to work around the modern technology to make sure information was revealed at the right pace.

What House would you be in if you were in Crescent City?

SJM: House of Flame and Shadow, no question.

The covers in this series are amazingly intricate. How involved are you in the cover design process?

SJM: Isn’t Carlos Quevedo an absolute god? Even his early sketches always take my breath away. I get to see the cover at various steps along the way, and it’s always super fun to watch Carlos add in more and more little details and Easter eggs at each step.

What’s your favourite detail in the House of Sky and Breath cover?

SJM: There’s so many fun details in there, but my favourite is definitely Hunt’s abs!

If you could have a career other than writing, what would it be?

SJM: I absolutely love flowers—beautiful flowers always bring me so much joy and calm and peace. I think I would have loved being a florist and bringing those vibes into other people’s lives, too.

Bryce Quinlan and Hunt Athalar have made a pact. As they process the events of the Spring they will keep things - platonic - until the Solstice. But can they resist when the crackling tension between them is enough to set the whole of Crescent City aflame?

And they are not out of danger yet. Dragged into a rebel movement they want no part of, Bryce, Hunt and their friends find themselves pitted against the terrifying Asteri whose notice they must avoid at all costs...

I have not started to read ‘House of Sky and Breath’ yet I am very excited too start it.
I am having a little trouble as Pages 471-518 are a different colour to the rest and my OCD is too much for me to try and read it. Hopefully I can get another copy from somewhere that doesn’t have the colour difference so I can continue on the story I love so much.
