Mercury Retrograde: Dos and Don’ts
Part of making the most of Mercury retrograde is being prepared.
Use the quick checklist of dos and don’ts below to help you make the right decisions.
Do | Don’t |
Read everything at least twice before signing or you might miss something in the details. If you sign a document during this time, you may change your mind or want to tweak the terms or conditions when Mercury turns direct. | Sign documents without reading all the small print. This obviously applies all the time, but especially when Mercury is retrograde. |
Renegotiate existing agreements. | Make new agreements or life-altering decisions that you want to be absolutely set in stone (because they won’t be). |
Expect delays and even cancellations when travelling. You might not be able to avoid travelling, so allow extra time in case of cancellations, postponements and delays. | Travel without a back-up plan and check everything in advance. Pack your sense of humour along with everything else. (Mercury is the trickster!) |
Allow plenty of time to deal with possible delays when travelling for appointments. Reconfirm the details before you set off. | Leave late for appointments and expect to make it on time. You’re more likely to end up doubly late than to arrive on time. |
Renew your commitments instead of making new ones. Finish things you started a while ago. | Start anything new before finishing what’s on your to-do list. Otherwise you might have to redo things later. |
Compare prices for something you plan to buy later and get repairs done on what you already own. If you do buy something, keep your receipt. Reduce your clutter and give away any old items. | Make major purchases, especially a car or computer, if you can possibly avoid it. That said, if you do buy something big now, you’ll likely replace it under a future Mercury retrograde cycle. |
Reapply for a job. Rewrite your CV. | Start a new job without being prepared for a few false starts and restarts. It may take some time for it to work out smoothly – but you’ll learn. |
Return to a course of study you didn’t complete. | Start a new course, if you can avoid it. On the upside, anything started under Mercury retrograde should be easily tweaked and reworked to suit your needs. |
Keep your mobile charged and back up your digital data. | Rely on your gadgets – it’s easier to mislay your mobile or fall prey to a computer virus while Mercury is retrograde. |
Get together with old friends and expect to hear from, or run into, people from your past at the weirdest moments. Double-check and confirm all dates, plans, meetings, appointments in advance. | Get together or schedule a meeting with an ex without careful thought. You’re more likely to experience confusion, mistakes and cancellations, or an on-again/off-again romance. Romances that start under Mercury retrograde will be forever under the influence of the cycle – but that can work well. You’ll have to test it and see! |
Read all emails and documents before you send them. | Send an email without double-checking – you could hit ‘reply all’ or send it to the wrong person. Send in unchecked work. This is another ‘rule’ that always applies but applies double under Mercury retrograde. |
Pause and breathe before speaking. Repeat yourself if necessary. | Lead people on, give mixed messages or believe everything you hear (actions speak louder than words), jump to conclusions, or spread rumours. |
If things do go wrong when Mercury is retrograde, try not to assume the worst. Give other people the benefit of the doubt. People, you included, are likely to be more careless, mistake-prone and forgetful when Mercury is retrograde; someone might not have read your e-mail or text – the fact that they haven’t yet replied doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ignoring you. Sometimes having conversations face to face can make things easier.
