The wait is over: Raymond E. Feist is back with the (very) eagerly awaited Firemane Saga conclusion, Master of Furies. If you haven’t yet read King of Ashes or Queen of Storms, be warned that there are minor spoilers below …
Master of Furies is the final volume in the Firemane Saga, the latest series from The Riftwar Cycle author, and continues from where Queen of Storms ended. Hatu is studying his lineage and magic training under Bodai, Hava is embracing her gift for piracy aboard the Azhante vessel, Queen of Storms, and Declan has embarked to South Tembria on a mission to retrieve the rare sand to make jewel steel, giving Daylon Dumarch’s barony superior arms and armour in the fight against the raiders.
Each character is still reeling from the horrific assault upon Beran’s Hill in Queen of Storms, which upended the serene story Feist has lured us into. It shouldn’t surprise any reader of Feist when tragedy strikes – he does it so well – but this attack was shockingly devastating. So much so, the need for retaliation through Master of Furies was gripping. I was equally captivated by the development of Declan’s story. On his journey south he encounters a series of misfortunes making this an extremely perilous expedition, while staying steadfast in his need to avenge Gwen’s death. This is a true hero’s journey.
Throughout this story we are guided deeper into Garn through South Tembria and the Burning Lands, over to the continent Nytanny, the home of the Azhante. It is well known that Feist is a master worldbuilder and Master of Furies is the latest example of this. Feist aims to “get as close to reality as a fantasy can get”, and with that comes complex, functioning societies that are an absolute joy to discover.
I had unbelievably high expectations for Master of Furies and I’m so glad it lived up to them. With his signature worldbuilding and masterful storytelling, this is sure to quench your epic fantasy thirst. Now concluded, it’s safe to say that the Firemane Saga is a worthy addition to the legacy of Raymond E. Feist.
—Master of Furies by Raymond E. Feist (HarperCollins Australia) is out now.
