Popular BookTokker, @retoldbyrebecca shared with Booktopia her recent favourite #BookTok recommendations! These books you have likely seen on your #FYP, and for good reason. Check out her recommendations below.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J.Maas

“If you’re new to the fantasy genre and looking for something to dip your toes into, A Court of Thorns and Roses is a fun place to start. It’s a dramatic, high-stakes fantasy romance loosely based on Beauty and the Beast. This is the series that got me back into reading after a three-year hiatus. I inhaled it”

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

“Lights, camera, scandal. This is your behind-the-scenes look into the life of a Hollywood golden girl and every questionable thing she did to climb to the top. As the title suggests, Evelyn’s story is sign-posted by her seven marriages, but the true heart and soul of this complicated woman is held by her one true lover. Evelyn is not a good person, she’s so much more. It’s been months since I first read this book and still can’t help thinking about it.”

Heartstopper Vol.1 by Alice Oseman

“This graphic novel series is the ultimate feel-good YA LGBTQIA+ romance. Nick and Charlie are spunky and awkward and absolutely adorable. I’d never been particularly fond of graphic novels, but this series captivated my heart. The art style is so unique and dynamic that you won’t even realise you were turning the pages until you’ve finished it. Best to grab the whole series so that you can read them all at once!”

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

“The marker of an extraordinary fantasy is the integral link it forms between the world, characters, and magic. I haven’t seen a book interconnect these elements this skilfully in a very long time. Bree is an African American teenager in the deep south grieving the sudden death of her mother. When she gets caught up in a secret society bound to the myth of King Arthur and the knights of the round table, every aspect of her past present and future begins to click. Deonn has written a compelling, action-packed, and one of my all-time favourite YA fantasy books. I can’t believe I didn’t read it sooner. The sequel, Bloodmarked, will be available in November 2022!.”

Terra Nullius by Claire G.Coleman

“This book is a thoughtful speculation of what it would have been like to exist during the colonisation of Australia. We are introduced to a large cast of characters from different positions within the colonial society and experience their trials, threats, and tribulations. This book is also a sci-fi fantasy take on colonisation, adding an enormous amount of complexity to an already intriguing story. Coleman also recently released her third novel, Enclave, which I rushed to purchase as soon as I was finished with Terra Nullius.”

Babel by R.F Kuang

“I’m not kidding when I say I have extensive dreams about how much I want to read this book. Rebecca Kuang, author of the incredible The Poppy War trilogy, is about to bring us the ultimate dark academia fantasy. This book is a critique of the colonisation of knowledge, racial prejudices, and the impossibility of translation. Every early review of this book I’ve seen has hailed it an all-time favourite. I can say with confidence that this is going to be one of the best books I read this year. Babel is available in August 2022!”

About @retoldbyrebecca

Rebecca is an actor, holder of a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, industrial relations associate, and is about to graduate with a Juris Doctor in the hopes of practicing law in 2023. When Rebecca was in primary school, she picked up a book with a lovely ginger cat on the cover and quickly became obsessed with the Warrior Cats books by Erin Hunter. She’s loved reading ever since. In 2021 she picked up A Court of Thorns and Roses on a whim and joined Tiktok shortly after as @retoldbyrebecca. Since then, she has been a devoted reader of fantasy with a particular interest in non-Western-inspired worlds and anything LGBTQIA+. When she’s not working or reading, she’ll have an iced coffee in one hand, a paint brush in the other, and the Netflix adaptation of Heartstopper playing on repeat.
