Elena is a Spanish writer, a self confessed hopeless romantic and a proud book hoarder. And now, she’s also the author of the New York Times and USA Today bestseller The Spanish Love Deception.

After years of devouring stories and posting––sometimes yelling––about them on her Instagram @thebibliotheque, she finally took the leap and started creating stories of her own.

To celebrate the release of her new novel The American Roommate Experiment, Elena has shared with us her guide to reading and enjoying the book! Read on …

Have you ever picked up a book and found yourself completely and utterly unprepared? Perhaps you chose that book based on the cover alone, everyone knows there’s certain magic on basing our decisions on vibes only. Or maybe, you picked your new read after an extensive and hour-long deep-dive. Or who knows, maybe your bookish bestie, that one person who you trust with your TBR, handed you out this book with a knowing smile. And yet, somehow, it caught you off guard.
Unprepared.

In The American Roommate Experiment, Lucas repeatedly comes to Rosie’s rescue like a Spanish knight in shining armour. Well, today, I’d like to do exactly that, even if just like Rosie, you think you don’t need rescuing. Regardless, I’m slipping into that armour I’ve obviously prettified with some glitter and feathers––because we can be tough and still look amazing––and gallop your way, like a bookish, female and fabulous, knight, to bring you nothing less than a spoiler free guide to my upcoming release, The American Roommate Experiment.

To start things easy, WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT from The American Roommate Experiment.

For one, romance. Lots of it. I was recently told by one of the early readers that this book felt like a love letter to rom-coms. And in a way, it is. In the book, Rosie is a romance writer with a deadline and no inspiration. She enters a fake-dating deal masqueraded as an experiment with Lucas––remember the Spanish knight? That’s him––and then, he proceeds to take her on very romantic and decidedly inspiring dates. This book is sprinkled with grand gestures, filled with scenes that will remind you of those rom-coms from the 2000s, the ones with flirty and cheeky Matthew McConahey (ah, those were times). And cheese. Lots of hopefully delicious cheese.

BUT, as much as this book is a rom-com at heart, it IS packed with more emotion than its predecessor. It somehow is more personal, and I think you’ll be able to tell.

WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE AROUND WHILE READING.

You might think this is irrelevant, but I have found myself reaching for a tissue, a snack, or a pillow to scream in, more than once and twice while reading. And honestly? It’s never fun to wake up your neighbours at two in the am because you couldn’t get a hold of your feels.

While reading The American Roommate Experiment, I encourage you to either have snacks around, or your belly full after a nice meal. Nah, you know what? Have those snacks around either way. Besides the rescuing, Lucas Martín loves to cook, and he does throughout the novel. The food references are so many that I found myself on my way to the fridge more often than not while writing this book. Now, besides those snacks, I suggest you get a hold of those pillows I mentioned. Not to scream into, although I’d love that for us, but to fall onto something plush and soft when you swoon. Yes, that’s cocky of me, but a girl can hope and I’m definitely hoping big-hearted, hug-giver Lucas will make you swoon right to the floor. And last but not least, have your phone in handy. Because if you love this book, if I can somehow manage to make you smile and swoon and love these characters as much as I do, I want you to tell me about it. To scream at me in all caps in my dms. So keep that phone close.
