Fourth Wing has exploded everywhere on the internet, becoming a Romantasy sensation. We are obsessed with the sizzling tension, incredible dragon riding and excellent world-building, and eagerly await the sequel, Iron Flame.
Everything we know about the Fourth Wing sequel, Iron Flame
We are beyond happy to share we have both a release date AND a synopsis from the woman herself, Rebecca Yarros, and it is spicy!
“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.
Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s gruelling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.
Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: 𝐷𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑜𝑛 𝑟𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑟𝑢𝑙𝑒𝑠.
But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.
Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.”

Lot’s to unpack here! Spoilers ahead for Fourth Wing so read at your own peril.
Five things we are excited to see in Iron Flame
Based on that explosive synopsis we think things are about to be really intense for our wonderful FMC Violet. Here are the things we would love to see in the Fourth Wing sequel. The se
Violet and Xaden’s romance
Xaden and Violet have both professed their love to each other by the end of Fourth Wing, however, weren’t in a particularly good place with the revelation that Xaden had been hiding information about the Venin, the resistance and Violet’s brother being alive. Considering how hard Violet mourned her brother, this betrayal will surely be a hard one to get over, but we can’t wait to see them make up. We expect lightning, window shattering and intense passion when they do!
Violet’s Mother getting comeuppance
Right, so we know Violet’s mum is shady and definitely knows about the Venin. We have also seen the really interesting theory that Violet’s mum actually wanted her to die and that’s why she forced her to become a rider, knowing there was a high chance of her death. General Sorrengai’s signet is also storms, and the wind suspiciously picked up as Violet struggled to cross the parapet….
Rhiannon to take centre stage
We love Rhiannon, and would absolutely want to see Rhiannon come into her own and enter centre stage in Iron Flame. We really enjoyed the loyalty she showed Violet and her funner banter.
Brennan Sorrengail lives! What is the resistance?
That plot twist had us reeling. Brennan is alive and in the resistance. We definitely want to know all about the resistance, and why/ how Brennan faked his death. We expect their reunion will be very emotional.
More Andarna and Tairn, please
We adored the grumpy / sunshine dynamic Violet’s dragons have and are keen to see their relationship develop further. Andarna underwent a big transformation at the end of Fourth Wing, and we are itching to know how this will affect her abilities, signet power and personality.
When does Iron Flame come out?
We are pleased to share we don’t have to wait too much longer (even though it feels torturous!) and will be available on November 8, 2023. You can pre-order the Iron Flame here.
It also seems Rebecca Yarros has a few more books in the pipeline for this series, and we just want to be along for the spicy, dragon-filled ride.
