REVIEW: Funny Story by Emily Henry

by |April 24, 2024

Calling all Emily Henry fans! She is back and better than ever with Funny Story, her latest rom-com. If you are excited to know more about the latest Emily Henry book, read our review below.

We were lucky to receive several advanced reader copies of this book, courtesy of our friends over at Penguin, and let me just say, the excitement was palpable.

Now that several of us have read it, we can all say that this entry from Emily Henry is right at the top of our romance book lists. Steph, our Assistant Category Manager said “This book was comforting, heartfelt, swoon-worthy – the best Emily Henry book I’ve read to date. If you’re a fan of romantic comedies that pull at your heartstrings, you must read this book!” – and if that isn’t a ringing endorsement – I don’t know what is.

The story revolves around Daphne and Miles, two protagonists in the midst of overwhelming heartbreak when the novel begins. Daphne has been unceremoniously dumped by her fiancé Peter, right before their wedding!

Peter goes off with Petra, his best friend and girlfriend of Miles. With nowhere to live, Daphne moves in with Miles, and thus sets the stage for a great love (and funny!) story.

Daphne and Miles are some of my personal favourite Emily Henry characters to date as they have such depth and interesting development. A big shout out goes to Ashleigh as well – she is so much more than a side character. I fell in love with this story and the fictional town of Waning Bay.

If you love romance books with depth that will make you feel a full spectrum of emotions, add Funny Story to your TBR.

Funny Story is officially out now!

The New 2024 novel from the author of Happy Place

by Emily Henry

Set over one sizzling summer comes a shimmering, joyful new novel about the happily-ever-after that wasn't and the exes determined to make the best of it from the #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of Happy Place and Book Lovers

Daphne always loved the way Peter told their story. How they met, fell in love, and moved back to his hometown to begin their life together. Too bad it turned out to be more of a prequel to Peter's actual love story with his childhood best friend, Petra.

So that's how Daphne's next chapter starts — stranded in a too-small town, propositioning Petra's heartbroken ex to move in. As roommates of course. A temporary solution until she gets a new job literally anywhere else.

Miles is the exact opposite to Daphne, and it's mostly just unbearably awkward until one drunken night. A tenuous friendship formed, Miles convinces her to give this idyllic town one last summer — he'll show her why he loves it and if they happen to post deliberately misleading photos of their adventures together, so be it.

But as Daphne starts to fall for the town, she is faced with a question — is Miles an interlude in her great love story with Peter or was Peter was just a footnote to that time she fell in love with her ex-fiance's new fiance's ex boyfriend?
