This analysis examines the interplay between the Voodoo church and the complexity of Haitian politics from the colonial period to the post Papa Doc and Baby Doc Duvalier era. The author attempts to reveal the strategic role played by Voodoo ideology and cult leaders during the Haitian Revolution. The study further documents the transformation of maroon (fugitive slaves) organizations into secret societies after the independence of the colony from France. During the 20th century Voodoo is found to be central to Haitian politics, especially during both Duvalier adminstrations, since some notorious Tontons Macoutes were also Voodoo priests.
