Dr Koowon Kim’s exposition of 1 Samuel is the best type of commentary by a gifted interpreter. He not only provides a clear and profound explanation of the meaning of the biblical book in its ancient context, he also shows its continuing relevance for today’s church, particularly, but not exclusively, in an Asian context. His use of the medieval Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms as a dialogue partner with the story of the biblical book was illuminating and interesting. I recommend this commentary for all readers.

Koowon Kim has written an excellent commentary on 1 Samuel for readers in the Asian context. For instance, he incorporates relevant episodes from the medieval Chinese historical novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, to illustrate some biblical ways of viewing thought and human relations. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is well-known among Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, and Japanese. The author is also an expert on Ugarit, so his explanations of Canaanite religious practices such as divination and necromancy are valuable. I hope this commentary will be used by many scholars in Asia and the rest of the world.
