A Companion to Contemporary Art in a Global Framework aims to bring together an international group of scholars and practicing artists to consider the ways in which the fine arts, performing arts, curation, cultural studies, and art history have attempted to place themselves in a more global framework, offering analysis of the triumphs and setbacks of these ambitious globalising efforts in the art world. Taking on the dual projects of examining the ways in which the art world has been fundamentally shaped by Western culture, while also considering the ways in which artists and art historians have endeavoured to decolonize and globalise the art world, this Companion offers an exciting and wholly new method of considering art in its global contexts.

Edited by Amelia Jones, also editor of the bestselling title A Companion to Contemporary Art Since 1945, with Jane Chin Davidson, A Companion to Contemporary Art in a Global Framework promises to push back against traditional historical attempts at globalising our views of the art world to offer a new, more progressive answer to this urgent need. As its starting principle, it asserts that ‘art’ is fundamentally a Western concept and thus any attempts to treat art as a global subject must first grapple with its conceptual definitions.  In three sections which broadly consider the history of the visual arts since 1980, contributing scholars will first offer an introduction to the topic of contemporary art in a global framework, thus addressing the history and development of this emerging area of scholarship. The second section of the volume takes a chronological view to the progression of recent developments in the art world with a focus on the historical and cultural contexts surrounding the efforts made by artists and scholars to globalise the art world. The third and longest section addresses major themes, including the fundamental institutions and ontologies of art practice; the interactions between art, politics, and the public sphere; and the major challenges encountered by scholars and artists who have attempted to globalise the art world as related to indigeneity, gender, sexuality, race, colonialism, ethnicity, and diaspora.

Considerations of the modern art world in global contexts is a growing and changing field in the world of art history, and this exciting volume promises to be on the cutting edge. It will become essential reading for any student or scholar of contemporary art in years to come.
