America's experience in Greece has often been cited as a model by those later policymakers in Washington who regard the involvement as a "victory" for American foreign policy. Indeed, President Johnson and others referred to Greece as the model for America's deepening involvement in Vietnam during the mid-1960's. Greece became the battlefield for a new kind of war--one that included the use of guerrilla warfare, propaganda, war in the shadows, terror tactics and victory based on outlasting the enemy. It was also a test before the world of America's resolve to protect the principle of self-determination. Jones argues that American policy towards Greece was the focal point in the development of a global strategy designed to combat totalitarianism. He also argues that had the White House and others drawn the real "lessons" from the intervention in Greece, the decisions regarding Vietnam might have been more carefully thought out.
Industry Reviews
"One hopes that everyone concerned about U.S. foreign policy will study Jones's excellent work and absorb its thoughtful admonition."--Perspective "[An] excellent, well-researched study....Most impressive."--Journal of American History "The ultimate value of this study lies in the author's ability to show how containment, flexible response, and ultimately, Vietnam grew out of the Doctrine. A fine, well-documented, and clear exposition."--CHOICE "Students of military history will find much to note....The best on the subject."--Military History of the Southwest "A solid work, carefully researched and well written. It is especially strong on political and military events."--The Journal of Military History "Forty years and more have passed since the Truman Doctrine, and several books have sought to explain this marked turn in American foreign relations, but none of them comes closer to the mark--and, I do believe, strikes the mark--than that of Professor Jones....The resultant study is a triumph, and deserves close reading by anyone interested in the turning of American foreign policy from isolation to participation that occurred in the years immediately after the Second World War."--Robert H. Ferrell, Indiana University "Contributes significantly to our understanding of American policy in Greece and is a very impressive attempt to explain the Greek scene during the late 1940s."--John O. Iatrides, Southern Connecticut State University "By viewing events in Greece as they appeared to American leaders at the time, Howard Jones succeeds in redeeming the much maligned Truman Doctrine."--Robert A. Divine, University of Texas at Austin
