Nineteen years after he left his hometown of Moses Lake, Washington, journalist Blaine Harden returned to discover the Pacific Northwest of his idyllic childhood had transformed from 'a Lake Wobegeon with dams to a natural-resource war zone.' Builders of dams, like his father, were accused of killing the Columbia River and wiping out its salmon population. Taking readers into the murky battle over the Columbia River - a 1,214 mile long, 10 mile wide river that snakes out of the Canadian Rockies and flows west into the Pacific - Harden examines the complicated human and environmental consequences of the conquering of the U.S.'s third largest river. Harden travels up and down the river by barge, car, and foot to speak with desert farmers, barge pilots, nuclear waste clean-up crews, salmon advocates, and Native Americans living on nearby reservations. Throughout, he maps with astonishing clarity the tangled knot of interests that now vie for control of the Columbia.
