Anglicans across the globe place a great deal of importance on the Reformation texts that were prepared for their churches as England broke free from Roman Catholic control in the sixteenth century. The most well known of these texts are the Book of Common Prayer and the Thirty-Nine Articles, both of which are still used extensively throughout the Anglican Communion. However, these were only two of the documents that served the wide, and carefully integrated, program of religious reform in the Reformation years. Alongside them were other equally authoritative texts prepared to form children in the basics of the faith, guide ongoing patterns of private devotion, model healthy biblical interpretation, expound core doctrines, and much more. This handbook offers an introduction to the full suite of doctrinally determinative documents of the English Reformation. It supplies an orientation to each family of documents, as well as to the individual texts that were sanctioned by the church, state and crown. In addition to descriptions of the texts, there is also a brief history of each type of formulary, discussions of their varied purposes, and lists of key references for further reading. The Anglican Church can only benefit from a fuller understanding of its own documentary heritage. Anglican Foundations is an unparalleled resource that offers students, ordinands, and all committed Anglicans the ideal orientation to the doctrinal texts of the English Reformation.

Industry Reviews

"It is a mistake to live in the past, but also a mistake to neglect it or misread it. In the English Reformation we can find gospel clarity, theological and intellectual wisdom, spiritual richness, and a fine model of preserving the past while living in and serving the present and making the most of its opportunities. Tim Patrick's book will enable us to benefit from the English Reformation with more historical understanding and theological awareness. A unique and valuable resource." - Rev. Dr Peter Adam, The Gospel Coalition Australia

"The need for a comprehensive guide to the sources of Anglican doctrine has never been greater than it is at the present time. Unfortunately many of them are virtually unknown, their importance is not understood and they are often hard to locate. Dr Patrick has done us a great service in compiling a detailed index of them, explaining what they are, why they matter and where they can be found. This book is an essential resource for anyone with a serious interest in Anglicanism, both past and present." - Rev. Prof. Gerald Bray, Research Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School

"For those of us in Anglican Churches geographically and linguistically isolated from all but the most basic of the primary and secondary sources of Anglicanism, this is a very handy resource which will alleviate some of that isolation." - Frances Cook, Lecturer, Centro de Estudios Pastorales, Anglican Diocese of Chile

"This is a splendid handbook on the various officially sanctioned formularies of the Anglican Church. Dr Patrick very helpfully outlines the primary sources, their contents and contexts, and gives us useful pointers for further study and reflection. An essential starting point for any investigation of historic Anglicanism and the Protestant faith established by the English Reformation." - Rev. Dr Lee Gatiss, Director, Church Society

"The first of its type in many years, Anglican Foundations is an excellent resource for someone who wants to know more of Anglicanism but is unsure where to start, for the interested layperson, and the seminary student contemplating a course of study toward their canonical exams. Dr Patrick gives a detailed description of the foundational sources for global Anglicanism as well as a bibliographical section for further reading that concludes every formulary. This book should be on the reading list of every Anglican in North America." - Rev. Canon Dr Henry Jansma, Rector of All Souls Anglican Church, Cherry Hill NJ; Canon Theologian for the Missionary Diocese of CANA East

"At this time of cultural crisis, when there is so much pressure to compromise the doctrines of the Church, it is essential that we draw on the wisdom of the past. Indeed it is from this source that we understand ourselves and understand who we should be. Tim Patrick has assembled and made accessible the key Reformation documents of the Anglican world and has provided a learned commentary to help us place them in context and see their enduring worth. For this work all Anglicans will be grateful." - The Most Rev. Dr Peter Jensen, former Anglican Archbishop of Sydney; former General Secretary, GAFCON
