This research aims to improve our understanding of the hydrological response of a large river basin (the Meuse in northwestern Europe) to climate variability and land use change. With available long and reliable daily observation records, the temporal changes (both gradual trends and abrupt changes/shifts) in the discharge and precipitation regimes in the Meuse basin upstream of Borgharen (about 21,000 sq. km) have been investigated using statistical trend detection methods. A synoptic-climatological analysis has been carried out to understand the observed precipitation change in the basin. Based on the statistical results in combination with the hydrological modelling results (using the semi-distributed conceptual HBV model), the historical rainfall-runoff relations in the Meuse basin and the hydrological effects of human activities (particularly land use changes) during the 20th century have been assessed.
The findings obtained in this research can be beneficial to the development of improved flood protection strategies as well as for water resources management in the Meuse river basin and other similar river basins.
