This beautiful picture book by award winners Roger Vaughan Carr and Ann James portrays the theory of the butterfly effect in a simple yet informative way.

Malani went to the forest each day with her father and his elephant. She played at the feet of the great forest trees, where she watched a beautiful butterfly. It is just a frail pretty thing that cannot do anything grand, she thought. But Malani never knew that the butterfly's delicate wings held strength enough to make even the might elephant tremble.

About the Author

Melbourne-born Roger Vaughan Carr is a well-known children’s author who has written school reading texts, novels for adolescents and contributed stories to the Victorian School Paper. He has published over 60 books and been shortlisted several times for Children’s Book Council of Australia awards. Roger has also written television, radio and film adaptations of his works. The Butterfly was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Award in 1997. About the illustrator Ann James is an award-winning author and illustrator of over 60 children’s books. Born in Melbourne, Ann was trained as an arts and crafts teacher, and has been a graphic designer and illustrator of educational publications. The Butterfly was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Award in 1997. In 2000 Ann won the Pixie O’Harris award, which was a formal acknowledgement of her contribution to the development and appreciation of children’s literature in Australia. In 1988 Ann co-founded the Books Illustrated gallery, a centre for children’s literature and book illustration and has exhibited the work of many prominent Australian illustrators including, Terry Denton and Shaun Tan.
