There is an urgent need for animal production systems that are more in balance with the ecosystem. With dairy farming, the environmental burden might be alleviated by increasing the proportion of the diet which comes from local feed resources and a more effective re-utilization of nutrients excreted in manure - a strategy that would result in a dairy farming system with less intensive land use, less dependent on external inputs. Developing such a strategy requires as integrated approach. Which feeds can potentially be produced locally? How do we optimize the quality of local feeds in the context of nutrient requirements of the modern - high producing - dairy cow on the one hand, and the environmental impact on the other? Do we have to change the genetic merit of the dairy cow towards a greater feed intake capacity? Will feeding a modern dairy cow at a lower energy level cause reproduction and health problems? How can we deal with the longer term socio-economic aspects? This symposium brought together a multidisciplinary team of scientists to discuss perspectives of environmentally balanced dairy cattle farming systems, in order to identify priorities for future research, recommendations for farm management practices, and advice on governmental policies.
