The modern debate on the novel continues to rage. At the end of World War II critics believed that technocracy might doom the novel. A half-century later, the concern is that the novel's significance may be eroded by subtle, more insidious forces. The number of serious readers continues to decline exponentially. Some argue that politically correct thought, attacking from within, produces novels that may be deficient sources of truth. McCormick shows that the novel is not dead. He takes as his text F.R. Leavis's claim that major novelists count in the same way as major poets. They not only change the possibilities of art for writers and readers, but they contribute to awareness of life's possibilities.
