A Lucas Davenport thriller by internationally bestselling novelist John Sandford
"Don't worry, I'm just a sociopath. Like you. I'm not psychopath or anything."
"How do you know I'm not a psychopath?"
Attorney Carmel Loan is beautiful, intelligent, ambitious - and used to getting what she wants. When she becomes infatuated with fellow barrister Hale Allen, she isn't going to let a little thing like his being married get in the way.
Through the contacts of an ex-client, she hires professional killer Clara Rinker to get rid of Allen's wife. Smart, attractive Rinker is the best hitwoman in the business - but things go wrong, and the shooting of a witness, a cop, brings DI Lucas Davenport onto the case. Carmel Loan and Clara Rinker must team up to clean up the loose ends - which includes getting Davenport off their backs by any means necessary . . .

Industry Reviews
In novels such as Rules of Prey and Shadow Prey, the American writer John Sandford has shown a commanding grasp of the thriller idiom, ensuring that his incident-packed narratives (while discursive) still move with express-train speed. This new one is as idiosyncratic and punchy as anything he has written. Clara Rinker is from the South: attractive and well turned out, she also happens to be one of the best hit women around. In her unspectacular fashion, she can always be relied upon to dispatch a victim with cool efficiency. But when she is hired for a job in Minnesota by a crooked defence attorney, things start to go wrong. A witness survives and a cop called Davenport is on her tail, with no sign of giving up. The conflict between the ruthless anti-heroine and the dogged Davenport is handles with authority and skill, as Sandford juggles the demands of character and the mechanics of the thriller genre with a master touch. Setting the book is his native Minnesota allows him to pack in some utterly convincing local colour, and the only regret is that this is the 12th Sandford novel with the word 'prey' in the title - isn't it time for a change?
