Throughout the story, little known facts and events about the Civil War Era, such as the lives of embedded war artists, are woven into the fabric of the narrative. The War was not simply a fight for Emancipation, but a war of Reunification. It is about hope; Lucy's determined search for freedom and her long lost mother.
