The memorial service for Dame Cicely Saunders, who died in 2005, was held in Westminster Abbey and was attended by 1,800 people. She was the founder of St. Christopher's Hospice and of the Modern Hospice Movement. Her work transformed the management of pain and the care of the dying, and led to the establishment of the field of palliative medicine. This changed the face of medical practice for ever.
Shirley du Boulay's biography made Dame Cicely's life known to a large public in 1984, yet Dame Cicely was to live for another 21 years. In this new edition, Marianne Rankin provides a further three chapters that cover the time until her death.
