Community Practices in Australia presents 15 contemporary case studies covering a range of community practices to help students and community workers improve  their skills and knowledge by reflecting on personal practice.  The book is organised into six sections, with case studies in each illustrating different ways in which communities and community groups within civil society engage with the state. Each  case study  draws out the principles, strategies and skills used to build and maintain a sense of community, either as an end in itself ,or as a vehicle to achieve social, economic, political and cultural change.

The text commences with four theoretical chapters which give coherence to the choice of case studies, and a final chapter entitled 'lessons from Australian community practices'.
