About the Authors

Dan Howard is a Senior Counsel at the NSW Bar. He is a former President of the NSW Mental Health Review Tribunal and a former Acting Judge of the District Court of NSW. He was for many years a Crown Prosecutor and appeared in many criminal trials and appeals, including numerous cases involving mental health issues. He has extensive experience in teaching criminal trial advocacy. He is currently a Visiting Professorial Fellow with the School of Law at the University of Wollongong, and a Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Psychiatry at the University of NSW.

Dr Bruce Westmore is a practising psychiatrist with extensive expertise in the areas of obsessive compulsive disorders, alcohol, drug and other addictions, autism spectrum disorders, brain injuries and forensic psychiatry. Dr Westmore is a former official adviser to the Government of New Zealand, assisting in organising and developing a national forensic psychiatry service, and is a former Director of Forensic Psychiatry in Queensland. He has been a visiting consultant to various private hospitals and he has had long term teaching commitments to postgraduate and undergraduate students. He has had extensive experience as an expert witness.
