DevOps for SharePoint

Chapter 01: Introduction Introduces the user to DevOps and the most popular tools used today.

Review of each tool and its purpose in in the context of our overall workflow.

Provides an overview of how this will be applied in the context of deploying and maintaining a SharePoint Farm in an enterprise environment.

Chapter 02: Getting up and running - setup your environment Provides an overview of the required environment setup including tools and platform to follow along.

Walks the user through required setup of Terraform, Vagrant, Packer, Ansible and source control.

Chapter 03: Prototyping and Testing a SharePoint Farm using Vagrant and ServerSpec Walks the user through the workflow of initially building the configuration files using Vagrant and adding automated testing using ServerSpec, an infrastructure test suite. This is the initial phase of the overall workflow, and subsequent chapters build upon this chapter.

Chapter 04: Packaging the SharePoint Farm using Packer Now that we have tested our infrastructure locally, we are ready to package it up and use Packer to create virtual machine images and specify the target environment. For our exercise, we configure it to deploy to AWS cloud.

Chapter 05: Provisioning the SharePoint Farm using Terraform

In this chapter, we take the artifacts we created in the previous chapter using Packer, and use Terraform to create the resources needed to build our infrastructure declaratively. Here we can configure Terraform to provision our infrastructure to multiple platforms, in our case we will deploy to both AWS and Azure clouds.

Chapter 6: Farm Level Configuration Management Using RedHat's Ansible Tool This chapter walks the user on how to make changes to the newly created and deployed farm using Terraform to make infrastructure changes i.e. change Farm topology. It also shows how to apply SharePoint updates using Ansible configuration management tool

Chapter 07: Establishing an Enterprise Environment to Manage and Collaborate as a Team In this chapter we discuss how to setup a proper configuration of Terraform and other tools to scale in the enterprise to allow for multiple team members to manage the SharePoint Farm. It provides the user with a holistic overview of all the tools and settings needed to ensure there is source control, proper security, and traceability for rollbacks when needed.
