Dolly Parton is universally beloved and known as a national treasure in the US. Her career as a singer-songwriter and actress has spanned decades, and she has left an undeniable mark on country music and pop culture forever.
Not to mention, she is also an author. She has released non-fiction titles about her life and songs such as Dolly Parton, Songteller and Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones. She has created kids’ books such as Dolly Parton’s Billy the Kid Makes it Big and Coat of Many Colors, and she has even tried her hand at fiction novels, including Run Rose Run, a romance novel written in collaboration with famed writer James Patterson.
Meet Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton was born in Tennessee in 1946, and was the fourth of 12 children. Her mother had her hands full, often entertaining her brood with ballads and folklore – which is why Dolly credits her musical abilities to her mother.
Dolly began performing at just age six at her church, eventually singing on local radio and television programs. At the age of 13, she recorded her first single, ‘Puppy Love’. After she graduated from high school, she moved to Nashville the very next day to chase her dreams.
In Nashville, Dolly initially found success as a songwriter. In fact, she would eventually go on to compose no fewer than 3,000 songs. After creating numerous hits for countless other singers, she eventually released her own album ‘Hello, I’m Dolly’ in 1967.
The following decades were a whirlwind of success, with songs such as ‘Jolene’ and ‘9 to 5’ becoming iconic hits. She also started acting for television and film, starring in the movie ‘9 to 5’ alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Her performance, and her release of the title song, won her numerous nominations and awards, further catapulting her into stardom.
Outside of her career, Dolly keeps a private life with her husband Carl Thomas Dean. She is also heavily involved in philanthropic efforts, largely through her own Dollywood Foundation. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library mails one free book per month to each child enrolled in the program until the child enters kindergarten, and in 2018, the charity donated its 100 millionth book.
She has also donated to a wide variety of charities and organisations, including medical centres, wildfire programs, scientific research centres, and environmental groups.
