The story is set in the 5th century CE, a time when Northern Europe was still in transition from the old religions to the new, and a time I have long been particularly interested in. Our hero is a Druid, Gwynlan, who, with his young apprentice, Taran, is asked to investigate the apparent sacrificial murders of a number of Christian monks. Gwynlan and Taran bear an uncanny resemblance to the characters played by Sean Connery and Christian Bale in the film of Umberto Eco's 'The Name Of The Rose [1987] [DVD].' This is actually quite a clever move, since those of us who have seen the film feel we already know these characters to some extent. The echoes of Eco (sorry) don't end there either, with a plot featuring sinister monks of weird appearance and the translation of hidden manuscripts.
Industry Reviews
The first volume of a gothic thriller whodunnit series set in the Age of the Saints. There is turmoil in the 5th century Celtic periphery of Europe; an age of change at the end of the Roman Empire, and an age of conflict between peoples and religions. Oppressed by Saxons to the east, many of the Celts of Britain have colonised Armorica in Gaul, bringing with them the spiritual leaders of their Celtic Church, the monks. The new faith heralds the demise of the old pagan way of life, but the ancient traditions still hold on. Gwynlan, the last of the Druids, and his apprentice Taran are caught in a mysterious battle for survival against the monks of the church, monastic foes who place dangerous and menacing obstacles in their path. Accusations of depravity, murder, sacrifice and sorcery are rife, but the old gods are at hand to assist the righteous. -- Cyhoeddwr: Dalen (Llyfrau) Cyf
