Aung San Suu Kyi, human rights activist and leader of Burma's National League for Democracy, has since 1989 repeatedly been placed under house arrested by the SLORC, the ruling military junta. Despite strong pressure from the international community, who have campaigned unsuccessfully for her release, she remains a prisoner of conscience in Rangoon. This collection of writings edited by her late husband, whom the junta refused to let her see while he was dying of cancer reflects Aung San Suu Kyi's greatest hopes and fears for her people and her concern about the need for international co-operation. It gives poignant reminiscences as well as independent assessments of her role in politics. Containing speeches, letters and interviews, these writings give a voice to Burma's 'women of destiny', who was awarded both the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought and the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize
