This book is a comprehensive, easy-to-access reference book for students, engineers and researchers engaged in the practical use of any aspect of 'hot wire' anemometry (HWA). The book introduces the logical framework for a computer based HWA system and identifies the individual steps in the complete experimental procedure ranging from probe selection through to presentation of analysed data. HWA is based on convective heat transfer from a heated wire or film element placed in a fluid flow. Any changes in the fluid flow conditions which affect the heat transfer from the heated element can be studied with HWA. This book explains the concepts and related practical implementations of all major HWA applications, and has been structured in such a way that it is of direct value to both people with little practical knowledge of HWA as well as to researchers with considerable experience in the field.
Industry Reviews
Hans Bruun has written a comprehensive book which provides a state-of-the-art survey on developments and use of HWA. The author approaches the subject in an easy to read, straightforward manner, starting with the basic principles of HWA. The material is informative and introduces topics such as the response equations used for HWA signal interpretation and methods for data acquisition, processing, and presentation. This is an excellent book written in a clear and readable style suitable for students, research scientists, and engineers. The text is well supported by mathematical analysis and, whenever necessary, with adequate illustrations and diagrams. I highly recommend the book to everyone working in the field of experimental fluid mechanics. It should be obligatory reading for students involved in turbulence measurements. Measurement Science and Technology, July 1996 This book does indeed cover everything you ever wanted to know about hot-wire anemometry; it is by far the most complete work on that topic yet published. The material is well ordered and exemplary in its coverage. This is an enthusiastic and unbiased book that should certainly be on the shelves of all practitioners of the art, whether in research or measurement. It should also be on the reading list of those contemplating a move into this area, if only as a warning of the complexity of the subject.
