King Lear was the king of England in ancient times. He was angry and unconscious by nature. Due to old age, he wanted to lead a worry free life by giving his kingdom to his daughters. So called her three daughters - Goneril, Reagan and Cardillia - and asked her how much she loved him. Goneril was married to Duke of Albany and Reagan to Duke of Cornwall, and both Duke of Burgundy and the King of France were interested in a settlement with Cardillia. Goneril and Ragin exaggerate their immense affection for the father, but Cardillia says in many words that she loves her father as much as is fair, not less, not more. Angered by this answer, King Lear divided his kingdom into equal parts in Goneril and Reagan by not giving Cardillia a third part. Goneril and Reagan pledged to keep Lear and his companions and their hundred feudatories with them in turn.
