Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was an American poet who is considered nowadays an important reformator of the American poetry. Whitman's poetry is influenced by the ideas of equality of people, no matter which race or confession they belong to. Whitman was among the first poets who managed to depict city as a huge live organism with its parts moving and developing. At the same time Whitman saw city as a symbol and a proection of the universe.
'Leaves of Grass' is a poetry collection book by Whitman that was first published in 1855. Whitman continued working on it and eventually the book was republished a number of times. His poetry featured distinct straightforwardness that was considered strange and even immoral for those times as thev majority of the poetry was focused on symbolic perception of the world but Whitman's works on the contrary were focused on the material world. In general Whitman thought that form that ideas take is as important as the ideas themselves.
