A Fun and Accessible Chemistry Program for All Students!

Living By Chemistry, Third Edition is an on-level chemistry program with an inquiry-based, activity-a-day approach. The program is grounded in NGSS standards and allows students to develop scientific-thinking skills and apply them to chemistry in the real world. Students learn chemistry in the same way that chemists work – by asking questions, collecting evidence, and thinking like scientists. The program includes a student edition and a full set of teacher resources plus digital support including an accessible and interactive e-book and online homework.

Features:
  • Employs Guided Inquiry: Living By Chemistry uses an inquiry-based approach to encourage students to ask questions and propose explanations based on evidence. This "experience-first" program is supported by daily lesson plans with hands-on activities to guide students’ in-class discovery. The student edition then supports in-class activities with at-home reading to further explain concepts.
  • Engages and Differentiates: Living By Chemistry's six units focus on big ideas of chemistry and frame core concepts within every-day, real-world contexts. The hands-on activities support all learners and capture students' interest while improving retention of concepts. Research Based: Living by Chemistry was developed as a National Science Foundation project and is the product of a decade of research and development in high school classrooms focusing on optimizing student understanding of chemical principles.
  • Worked Examples: Example Problems and Exercises walk students through problem-solving strategies.
  • Problem sets at every level of the book provide students with many opportunities to practice problem solving Updated Data and Science to meet state and NGSS standards.
  • Ideal Preparation for the AP® Chemistry Course: Author Angelica Stacy assisted in the development of the NGSS standards and served on the AP® Chemistry redesign committee. She designed Living By Chemistry as an introduction for students who will take AP® Chemistry or additional college classes.
  • Chapter Openings introduce the main ideas and learning goals of the chapter.
  • Math Spotlights: Quick reviews of important math topics.
  • Connecting Chemical Concepts feature in Appendices provide helpful support.
  • English/Spanish Glossary
  • An Unmatched Teacher’s Edition - In a traditional wrap around format, the Teacher’s Edition for Living by Chemistry has everything needed to plan and conduct a truly inquiry-based chemistry course, with daily lesson plans following the 5E model, answers to assessments, teaching tips, and links to materials lists, worksheets, and lecture tools. Features include:
    • Differentiate, which helps instructors adapt lessons to reach students of all levels.
    • Pre-AP® course tips to help instructors prepare students to take AP® Chemistry.
    • And so much more!
About the Author

Angelica M. Stacy is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. At Berkeley, she teaches introductory chemistry and does research in materials chemistry and chemistry education. She has received numerous awards and honors for her teaching and held the President’s Chair for Teaching at the University of California from 1993 to 1996. In 2005, the National Science Foundation named Dr. Stacy a Distinguished Teacher Scholar. As a part of her work to help more students succeed in science and gain a better understanding of the principles of chemistry, she has participated as a member of the Physical Sciences Design team that helped develop the Next Generation Science Standards. She has also participated on various AP® chemistry course committees as part of the College Board’s efforts to redesign the AP® chemistry course and exam. Dr. Stacy has worked for many years in designing and refining the Living by Chemistry curriculum. She developed this curriculum to support students as they learn chemistry by offering them engaging challenges that relate to the world around them.
