Neuropsychosocial Integration: A Practical Approach to Discharging Trauma and Recovering the Authentic Self explores the incidence of psychosocial trauma in ordinary life as it persists across generations. From the Latin word to make "whole," integration speaks to wholesomeness in the body and mind and authenticity in the self that is presented to the world. A manifestation of psychosocial trauma, thus, is disintegration in the self and in between the body and mind that brings suffering. A suffering that, the book argues, can be met with a quiver of metaphorical spears with which integration can be recovered along with authenticity in the self and wellbeing in the body and mind.

The book is written for a diverse audience, as it speaks to the experience of two thirds of us who come to ordinary life having been exposed in some way to adverse lived experiences and protracted psychosocial stress that leave us wounded, and the seventy-five percent of us who respond well to therapy through which we recover from our woundedness and lead more fulfilling lives. This scope holds a specific appeal for graduate-student trauma researchers, therapists, clinicians, as well as lay individuals exploring their own traumas.

Industry Reviews

This is a conversational book on trauma integration and disintegration that honors spirituality and neuropsychosocial elements in a way that I have not yet seen.

--Pensiri N. Oden, Gannon University

Winniey Maduro brings a fresh perspective to the experience and recovery of trauma with the focus on a holistic approach to trauma treatment that incorporates neuroscience. This provides a well-rounded approach for clinicians and students. Using a conversational style, Maduro invites us to explore the intersection of self and others, better understand our actions, and honor both our bodies (somatic experience) and wisdom that is passed down from our ancestors. I believe this would integrate nicely and bring a fuller perspective to my Understanding Trauma course materials.

Neuropsychosocial Integration is a book that teaches about how we heal from trauma in a multidimensional way; neurologically, psychologically and socially. It is holistic in its understanding of trauma, addresses transgenerational trauma, and presents a cultural perspective not often discussed. The author not only discusses the existing knowledge base on trauma, but also introduces their own work in the presentation of frameworks and tools such as ALE's (Adverse Life Experiences), which advances upon the more commonly known ACE's (Adverse Childhood Experiences), which has transformed the field, but also examines the impact of childhood experiences. Furthermore, the author calls attention to the measurement of historical trauma, filling a critical gap in the literature. Little is known or researched about historical trauma, presumably because it is often the story of the marginalized, whose voices are not often elevated, and there are few measurable tools that can be used to measure the impact of such traumas. This addition has the potential to further advance our understanding of ancestral, intergenerational, as well as structural and systemic traumas.
