"Captivating, suspenseful & raw. An accurate depiction of life during that time. Incredible!"

When Danny Jackson says "the N-word" on his fifth birthday his grandmother tells him their family doesn't use that word, though he's learned it from his father. There's a mysterious grave in their woods, and all he's ever heard it called was "the N-word Grave." Thus begins a family saga and coming of age story as an Appalachian grandmother tries to change her family's worldview regarding race relations.

But can Danny overcome a cruel, abusive rural Appalachian upbringing steeped in racism; and, will he help a black man solve the decades-old murder of the black man's Great-grandfather?

Danny and Martin Noble Peoples, a descendant of the murdered black man, team up to uncover the truth about what really happened to A. Noble Peoples. What they learn from Danny's grandmother is even more shocking than they anticipated.

If you liked Scout Finch and Idgie Threadgoode you are going to love Laurel Mountain McLandon Jackson.

Inspired by True Crimes. A black man was murdered in my hometown in the 1920s, and my Great-great-grandfather allowed him to be buried on our farm.

How, why and from whom do we learn the things we learn and become the people we become? Laurel Mountain McLandon Jackson would say some of it is like hand-me-downs and heirlooms - we "come by it honest."

Industry Reviews

A Stunning, Raw Novel

Not only is Johnson's book exceptionally well written but I put it up at the levels of Christy by Catherine Marshall or even To Kill a Mockingbird. And, I'm not exaggerating. This is a blockbuster book that I give 5 stars because it kept me 100% engaged. I was unable to put it down. This is Appalachian writing at its very finest. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Gripping Character Development with a Powerful Voice

This novel provided a reading experience that was both entertaining and introspective for me. It is one of those books that has a visual voice playing out in your mind throughout the read. It addresses racism in Southern Appalachia face-on as the narrative develops. The characters are carefully built up and feel like people I have always known even though I have never met them. I was left in awe after the ending, cloaked in mystery, was finally revealed.

The Real and the Imagined, Carefully Crafted

Written with regional perfect-pitch narrative, humor, suspense, and heart, this book is a nugget of Appalachian life you won't want to miss.

-Marcia

A Mystery and an Honest Telling of Family Relationships and Southern Culture

The mystery at the heart of the story captivates the reader, but it is the honest portrayal of the Appalachian people, and one family in particular, that makes this book special. As a resident of the area, but not a native, I felt the characters jumped off the page through their natural dialogue that seems to have been recorded.

Many Secrets, Then and Now

Stanford Johnson writes a mystery novel filled with Appalachian folklore, Southern history, and colloquial speech. It's riveting from the very first page.
